Olam's entry into the Pulses & Beans business was initiated by leveraging its distribution strengths in some of the key markets in S E Asia and Africa. We started this business by offering beans to existing set of customers. From this niche participation, we have now expanded our distribution presence in the Indian Sub-continent as well as other consuming markets in S America and Europe.
Olam is emerging as a significant player in the Beans & Pulses business. A niche business three years ago, is now evolving into a global business reaching some of the most important markets and origins of the world. We are leveraging our redistribution strengths in key markets to establish ourselves as an important and reliable supplier of pulses. Concurrently, we have made selective investments in the producing countries to achieve delivery capability across a range of products including Kidney beans, Peas, Lentils, and Chickpeas.
In the initial phase, the pulses strategy was destination-lead following the natural adjacencies in the area of customer sharing. Once we established a presence in the markets we began leveraging our origin presence in key producing countries including India, East Africa, South and North America to develop procurement capability for pulses. Migrating into new products in existing geographies is Olam's core competency, as a result we were able to grow the business rapidly. Apart from our presence in existing origins, we have also made investments in a few important origins for pulses like Burma, China and Uzbekistan. We are also engaged in sourcing the product from select suppliers in other producing countries including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Turkey, and Ethiopia.
With our presence in important growing origins and distribution reach in important markets, we have created a unique platform for growth which will catapult us into being a top supplier of pulses & beans . We see tremendous opportunities for growth in the future.
